Adaptogens

Our Adaptogens collection gathers six roots, a fruit and two mushrooms that herbalists group as adaptogens, a word coined by the Soviet scientist Nikolai Lazarev in 1947. Each is an alcohol-free tincture made with Extranatur, our patented alcohol-free extraction method, prepared from the dried plant or dried mushroom.

  • Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), root: a classic of Ayurveda; its Sanskrit name refers to the scent of a horse.
  • Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea), root: also called roseroot, it grows in subarctic, rocky lands from Scandinavia to Siberia.
  • Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus), root: a thorny shrub of the Russian Far East, studied by Soviet researchers from the 1950s.
  • Ginseng (Panax ginseng), root: part of Korean and Chinese herbal tradition for some two thousand years.
  • Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis), fruit: wu wei zi in Chinese, the “five-flavor fruit.”
  • Maca (Lepidium meyenii), root: a food crop of the Peruvian Andes, grown above 13,000 feet.
  • Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), root: huang qi, or “yellow leader,” in Chinese tradition.
  • Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), mushroom: the lingzhi of Chinese tradition, a recurring motif in Chinese art.
  • Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis), mushroom: a fungus with a long history in Tibetan and Chinese herbal tradition.
